Gift. *)

Het ligt in onze macht
om dingen weg te geven.
Zo wordt het leed verzacht
van hebzucht die wil kleven.

Het geven maakt ons rijk
en armoê neemt de wijk
wanneer wij laten gaan
het idee dat wij bezitten
dat aan ons blijft klitten
totdat wij juist verstaan:

het leven is aan ons gegeven
en zelf zijn wij eruit geweven,
de gift is nooit van ons geweest
en was van meet af aan verweesd.

*): "Vrijgevigheid is de deugd die vrede brengt",
     traditionele oryokitekst.

    "The quality of mercy is not strain'd,
     It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven
     Upon the place beneath: it is twice bless'd;
     It blesseth him that gives and him that takes
     'Tis mightiest in the mightiest; it becomes
     The throned monarch better than his crown;
     His sceptre shows the force of temperal power,
     The attribute to awe and majesty,
     Wherein does sit the dread and fear of kings;
     But mercy is above this sceptred sway,
     It is enthroned in the heart of kings,
     It is an attribute to God himself,
     And earthly power doth then show likest God's
     When mercy seasons justice."

William Shakespeare, "The Merchant of Venice", Act IV, Scene I.
